Men's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Embry-Riddle

The Warriors won three of the six singles matches on Sunday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 13-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (9-7 overall) battled Embry-Riddle (7-6 overall, 1-2 Sunshine State) in a re-match of last season's NCAA Quarterfinals, and it was the Eagles coming out on top as they defeated the Warriors 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Crotty Tennis Complex. 

DOUBLES
ERAU earned the victory in all three doubles matches to jump ahead early. 

Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) fell 6-4 to begin the afternoon at the No. 3 doubles spot. 

Likewise, Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) also dropped a 6-4 decision at the No. 2 spot. 

The No.5-ranked doubles pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) fell in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot (7-6 (4)) to Alexis Guedy and Luke Paschal of the Eagles.

SINGLES
The Warriors and Eagles split the six singles matches, but the Green and Gold were unable to overcome their defeat in doubles.

Claiming victories in singles were Spicer, Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), and Kitayama.  Karcz and Kitayama were the first two to finish at the No. 4 and No. 6 spot, respectively.

Graduate student Karcz was nearly unbeaten in his match against Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo, winning the first set 6-2 and the second set, 6-0. 

Kitayama posted matching 6-2 victories in straight sets over Paschal, putting WSU ahead 2-1 in the overall scoreboard. 

At the No. 2 spot, Embry-Riddle knotted the score at two.  No. 25-ranked singles player Drenth fell in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 3-6) against Michele Iftimie. 

The aforementioned Spicer put the Green and Gold ahead for the final time (3-2) with his 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over his opponent. 

The Eagles won the matches at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles spot to earn the final two points and clinch the match.  Playing at the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, Grey (The No. 5-ranked singles player) won his first set by a 6-4 score over the No. 51-ranked player in Guedy.  Guedy would win the next two sets (6-1, 6-2).

Lukas Schneider clinched the match for ERAU, as Laws fell at the No. 5 spot in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 3-6).
