Senior Day Sweep Concludes Weekend for Volleyball

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (15-11 overall, 10-5 GLIAC) hosted Wisconsin Parkside (7-19 overall, 4-10 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors collected their second sweep of the weekend by winning by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.

Prior to the match, the six graduating seniors were honored and recognized in front of the home crowd.  Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison), Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron), Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central), Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian), Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) and Alexa Methner (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) were the six Warriors potentially playing their last match inside the Matthaei.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Richardson gave WSU a 5-4 kill and kept the Warriors on top by one with another kill to make it 8-6 Warriors.  Parkside led 12-9 prior to a 3-0 Wayne State run tied the set at 12-12.  Points from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) gave the home team a 16-15 lead and an attacking error by the Rangers made it 20-18.  An ace by Parkside trimmed the margin to one at 23-22 but the Green & Gold won two of the final three points to win 25-23.  Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) sealed the victory with back-to-back kills.

Frazee tied the second set at 4-4 with a kill before the Rangers took an 8-6 and 10-7 lead.  Wayne State responded with a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead.  A kill from Krenz and a UWP error gave the Warriors 16-14 lead but the Rangers would stay close, tying the game at 17-17 and 18-18.  A kill and two service aces by Wagner pushed WSU's lead to 21-18.  Consecutive kills from Richardson made it 24-20 and Richardson ended the game with another point to give WSU a 2-0 match lead.

The Warriors led the third set 5-4 and 8-7 following a kill by Duffield.  Five straight kills from Richardson extended the home advantage to 13-10.  Richardson continued to have the hot hand and added another kill plus an ace to give WSU a 15-13 lead.  Parkside stormed back, taking a 16-15 lead and eventually led 19-17.  After a timeout, Wayne State answered with two quick points to make it 20-19.  The Rangers would tied the set at 20-20 and 21-21 before the Warriors won four of the final five points to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson tallied a game-high 17 kills, while Krenz finished with 11.  Duffield collected 37 assists and Rodriguez anchored the defense with 12 digs.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH KOTH
"Overall this was a very nice weekend for Warrior Volleyball.  On Friday we had the opportunity to play some young players and get a glimpse of the future and today we celebrated our seniors who have meant so much to the development of Wayne State Volleyball.  I'm proud of our team and look forward to seeing where things develop!"

GLIAC TOURNAMENT
WSU has qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the third straight season and are currently the fifth seed.  The Warriors still have a chance to host a Nov. 7th quarterfinal contest but will need some help as the top four teams get hosting duties for the opening round.  Saginaw Valley State currently holds the tiebreaker of Wayne State.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will conclude the regular season on Nov. 3rd at Ashland with first serve set for 2:00 p.m.
