Velasco's Fourth Match-Clinching Victory Helps Lakers Fend Off Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's tennis program (6-3, 1-0 GLIAC) earned a 4-3 victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies (0-9, 0-1 GLIAC) to open conference play on Sunday.

The Lakers got off to a hot start in doubles play as Xavier Vicent Navarro (Cocentaina, Spain) and Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain) raced out to a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot to give their team an early advantage. The duo of Aaron Osmond (Cheltenham, U.K.) and Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Quebec) would then come away with a strong 6-4 win at the top doubles position to secure the doubles point, and Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain) and Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) completed the sweep of doubles play with a 6-4 win of their own.

Osmond would open singles play with a straight-set victory in the top singles match by a score of 6-3, 7-6, but the Huskies would respond climbing back into the match with a win at the No. 3 spot, and coming back to take the No. 2 singles match despite a strong effort from Ollers. Fraile would then put the Lakers back in front with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 singles match, but Michigan Tech claimed another three-set win at the No. 5 singles position to knot up the overall score at 3-3, turning all attention toward Velasco, a position that he has found himself in time and time again. The Huskies were able to take the opening set by a score of 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match, but Velasco answered right back, taking the second set with a 6-4 score of his own. Both players would then battle back and forth throughout the third set, forcing a tiebreaker to decide the winner, but in the end, Velasco would ultimately come out on top, once again proving to be strong in clutch moments with his fourth match-clinching victory of the season.

The Lakers will be looking for their third-consecutive victory on Friday, March 24 when they take on the Purdue Northwest Pride with the first serve scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
