Belyeu hits milestone mark in setback to Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley hosted the Davenport Panthers on Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon in another GLIAC tilt. Despite leading by 10 points with just under eight minutes left, the Cardinals couldn't hold-off the Panthers and the visitors ended up claiming an 84-74 victory at O'Neill Arena.

Sophomore guard Myles Belyeu surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the game, as he scored 24 points in the contest to put him at 1,001 total for his career.

SVSU falls to 14-11 overall and 8-9 in the GLIAC. Davenport improves to 19-8 with an 11-6 record in conference play. 

The first half was a close one, as the Cards held a narrow 37-36 lead that carried over into the halftime break. Belyeu had 13 points and three rebounds through the first 20 minutes and Malik Ellison added 10 points with three boards and an assist. 

After the Panthers grabbed a second half lead, Saginaw Valley eventually worked its way out to its largest lead of 10 points when Belyeu made good on a layup to give the home squad a 64-54 edge.

Davenport went on a 17-0 run from there, taking a 71-64 lead with just over three minutes left to play in the contest. 

The visitors maintained their lead and eventually claimed a 10-point victory over the Cardinals, 84-74. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu hit the milestone mark with those 24 points and added five rebounds, three steals and an assist. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" for his efforts.
  • Ellison scored a game-high 26 points and added four boards and three assists.
  • James Toohey added eight points while Delano Smith had seven points, five rebounds, three helpers, a steal and block.
