The Warriors win all four home matches to begin spring slate.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (4-0 overall) capped off the weekend by defeating visiting Northwood (1-2 overall) 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold put forth another quality effort in doubles play, winning the point to move ahead 1-0 in the overall match.

The pairings at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots made efficient work of their Northwood opponents. At No. 2, Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) won by a score of 6-2. The No. 3 duo of Shanice Weekes (London England) and Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich.) claimed the point for WSU with their 6-3 victory.

With the point already decided, the action at the No. 1 doubles spot was not for a point but ended up being the most competitive of the three doubles matches. Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and partner Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) were trailing 5-2, but soon rallied back to tie the score at 5-5. The duo forced a tiebreak at 6-6, and Arafat and Gorgidze won that to win at No. 1, 7-6 (4).

SINGLES
First to finish in singles action was Arafat, who handled her opponent 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot.

Ruyssen was pushed by Rafaella Platsiota in both sets at the No. 1 spot. The junior trailed 1-5 in the second set, but rallied back and ultimately held off her competitor and won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

The Warriors clinched the win at the No. 4 spot with Szpakowska. She triumphed in the first set 6-1 and fell in the second set 2-6 to force a deciding third set, in which the freshman was victorious, 6-1.

Weekes and Mandair put the finishing touches on the contest for WSU, as Weekes won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 while Mandair won 6-4, 6-0 against Regan Fales of the Timberwolves at No. 6.

Gorgidze fell in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6, to Danijela Danilovic of Northwood at the No. 3 spot.

FROM THE PLAYERS
"It was a successful day for us. We got more challenged today, but we were able to fight back and show a great deal of heart on the court. We had great energy overall and and demonstrated mental toughness towards the adversity. The Warriors are excited for more ahead!" said Anais Ruyssen.
