Women's Tennis Captures 7-0 Victory Over Davenport

The Warriors won their third home contest in a row via shutout on Friday,

DETROIT -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (18-3 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) remained in prime position for a first-round bye in next week's GLIAC Tournament after downing visiting Davenport (12-11 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) 7-0 on Friday inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

The Warriors move their winning streak to five games with the triumph.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold captured two of the three doubles contests, enough to earn a 1-0 advantage in the conference clash.

Winning first were the top flight and No. 35-ranked doubles pairing of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland).  The two defeated the No. 16-ranked tandem of Amy Bloch and Willemien Coetzee, 6-4, in impressive fashion to improve to 11-5 together in spring dual matches.

Also victorious were the team of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England), as they won 7-5 over Isabella Carofano and Louise Hosking at the No. 3 spot.

Falling 6-4 in the other doubles contest were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) at the second position.

SINGLES
Already ahead by a 1-0 margin, the Warriors swept singles play and clinched their third consecutive home shutout.

Komar was first to finish, surrendering just a single point in a 6-1, 6-0 dispatching of Coetzee at the second flight.

Next to finish, and giving WSU a 3-0 advantage in the match, was Ruyssen at the top position.  The No. 34-ranked singles player dropped Bloch by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 to improve to 17-4 overall this spring.

Clinching the match for Wayne State was Gorgidze at the No. 4 spot.  She put the finishing touches on the Warriors' 18th victory of the season with her 7-5, 6-2 triumph vs. Hermon Mikael.

Arafat nabbed a 6-2, 7-6 win over Skye Vandeleur at the No. 3 position to continue the streak for WSU.

Playing in her first singles match since March 11, and her third overall this spring, Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) put together a strong 6-1, 6-1 victory vs. Hosking at the sixth spot.  The senior has now won all three of those singles matches, proving to be a dependable and key asset to the Warriors when called upon.

Finally, Weekes needed to do some heavy-lifting in her fifth flight match against Carofano, winning 7-5 in the opening set but falling by a 6-2 margin in the second set.  The freshman recovered and finished strong, notching a 10-4 win in the tiebreaker and concluding a perfect afternoon for her squad.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its regular season schedule on Saturday with a Senior Day match against Purdue Northwest.  The contest will begin at approximately 2 p.m., following the men's match.
