Bulldog Soccer Battles But Falls To GVSU In GLIAC Tourney Semifinals

Highlights & Postgame Video

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer squad battled to the finish, but fell 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals to reigning NCAA Division II National Champion Grand Valley State on Friday (April 30) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

Ferris State carried the play in a stiff wind across the field with a 12-5 shot attempts advantage. Both teams finished with four shots on goal.

The Lakers scored the game-winning goal at 6:37 of the contest when Kennedy Bearden sprung free down the right side of the box on an assist from Lauren Ross. Bearden's goal was her third of the year and gave GVSU an early 1-0 edge.

Ferris State's best opportunity came less than two minutes later when senior Abigail Gilmore fired a bullet for the top right corner, but Grand Valley State's Jessica Radice jumped and put the ball off the crossbar to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Gilmore and sophomore Payton Price led the Bulldogs with three shot attempts apiece.

The Bulldogs had a 7-1 edge in shot attempts in the second half of the contest as they searched for the equalizer.

Ferris State junior goalkeeper Taryn Meiste made three stops for the Bulldogs in goal while Grand Valley State's Radice made four and earned the clean sheet.

The setback brought the Bulldogs' spring campaign to a close. Meanwhile, GVSU advanced to Sunday's GLIAC Tournament Championship game versus Northern Michigan in Big Rapids.

On the year, the Bulldogs won their first GLIAC Regular Season Championship (7-0-1), finished 8-1-1 overall and allowed only two goals on the campaign. The Bulldogs also surged to their highest national ranking in program history. Head Coach Greg Henson won his 100th career game as head coach of a collegiate women's program during the campaign as well. FSU also played host to the league tournament semfinals and finals for the first time in school history.
