Lakers Fall to Rangers 3-1 In Competitive Match

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.- The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell to the Wisconsin Parkside Rangers 3 sets to 1 (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 24-26). The Laker's fought hard and the two teams kept things close as the average spread at the end of each set was around 3.3 points.

 

The Lakers would come out hot in the first set. At one point, the Lakers would have a 10-4 lead over the ranger. The Rangers would battle back to even the score at 12. From there on, the Lakers would have several nice service aces and blocks to edge off the Rangers 25-21.

 

In set two, the Lakers would once again take the lead early by a score of 5-2. The Rangers would not be silenced as they would eventually take the lead 10-9. The match would stay relatively even for the remainder of the set until back to back blocks by the Rangers would seal the victory for Wisconsin Parkside with a score of 25-22.

 

Set three began with the Rangers taking charge. 4-1 would be the start of the set. The Lakers would rally late in the set. LSSU went from being down 15-22 at one point to bringing the score to 21-24 just before a critical kill from the Rangers.

 

Set four would be the deciding set of the match. The Rangers took the Lakers by storm, leading at one point 16-6. Following a time out by Laker head Coach Dave Schmidlin, the Lakers would take charge, scoring 6 straight points and taking the lead late in the set, 23-20. However, after a timeout of their own, the Rangers would bounce back to tie the score 23-23. The Lakers would take the next point off of a double-contact violation by the Rangers. However, Wisconsin Parkside would prevail in the end, following a service ace by the Lakers and two kills.

 

The Lakers will return to action tomorrow night (10-8) against the Pride from Purdue Northwest. The game will take place in the Rondal "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium at 2:00pm. The Lakers definitely rallied off of crowd support tonight and anyone is welcome to join in cheering on the Lakers!
