Golden Bears win GLIAC opener in home debut

Concordia tops Ashland 16-6 on Friday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (2-1, 1-0 GLIAC) notched its second consecutive 10-goal victory on Friday night, defeating Ashland University (1-2, 0-1 GLIAC) 16-6 in the conference and home opener at Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium. The two teams will play again on Sunday at 11 a.m. for a rematch in the Concordia Dome.

The win propels the program to a sixth straight home win, spanning indoors and outdoors as well as parts of three different seasons, extending a program record. CSP has not lost at home since April 20, 2019 (outdoors vs Indianapolis) and has also won six in a row at its indoor home in the Concordia Dome, last falling on March 15, 2019 to Grand Valley State. Concordia is now 14-10 all-time at home and 12-6 when playing in the Concordia Dome.

Senior Katie Moynihan registered a career-high four goals in the win while senior Lex Seifert dished out four assists, just one off her single game school record. Sophomore Taya Schubert did a bit of both, leading the team with five points while scoring twice and dishing out three assists.

Three other players had three point performances for Concordia as junior Sara McNicoll had three goals while junior Mary Keating and redshirt freshman Julia Monson each had two goals and an assist.

It was a balanced scoring effort as eight different players scored goals and seven different players had multiple points.

The team was strong in the middle, securing a 15-9 advantage on the draw behind senior Sarah Pierson's seven draw controls and after coasting to an 11-3 halftime lead, CSP controlled the possession in the second half by winning seven of the nine draws, eliminating the Eagles' comeback chances.

In building the early lead, CSP scored the first four goals in the opening six and a half minutes as Seifert assisted McNicoll twice early on. Concordia then extended the lead to 7-1 in the 20th minute as Schubert had back-to-back assists while Seifert secured her third.

Concordia's lead never dipped below five the rest of the way and was at least an eight goal lead for the entire second half.

Freshman Maddy Huebner won her first career start in goal, stopping four Ashland shots in the first half while also picking up four ground balls in her debut.

In front of her, redshirt freshman Maki Jenner sparked the defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls - both team highs.

Natalie Sonntag led the Eagles with three goals, adding five caused turnovers, five draw controls and four ground balls in a strong all-around individual performance. Jillian Rekulak took the loss in goal, allowing 16 goals but making 11 saves as the Golden Bear attack kept Ashland busy on the defensive end.

Concordia successfully cleared all 17 attempts while holding Ashland to 12-of-17, and CSP had a strong advantage in turnovers, committing 17 compared to Ashland's 24 with ground balls going in CSP's favor by a similar margin, 25-17. The end result was CSP rifling 13 more shots, 33-to-20 in the contest.
