Cards close weekend with 5-3 win over UIS

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The Cardinal Baseball team finished its weekend on Sunday with a solid 5-3 victory over the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars at West Virginia State University. Saginaw Valley went for five runs in the first inning, paced by a grand slam by Austin Koin

Brandon Scheurer scored the game's first run on a wild pitch and then Koin delivered the long ball and four RBI, scoring Dylan Golden, Joshua Riggs and Collins Winters. That opening inning saw the Cards score all five of their runs for the game.

UIS scored runs in the top of the 4th, 8th and 9th innings but that was not enough as Saginaw Valley moved to 4-1 overall on the season after the victory.

On the Mound

  • Hunter Merillat picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound, getting the start and tossing the first 5.0 innings. He allowed a single run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
