SVSU sweeps rival Northwood in Midland

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team earned a split of the season series with rival Northwood University, sweeping the Timberwolves on the road Saturday in Midland, Mich.

The Cardinals took control early, rolling to wins in the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-12. Northwood kept it close in the third, but SVSU closed it out with a 25-22 win.

The second straight win for the Cardinals moves SVSU to 14-8 overall and 6-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The SVSU took advantage of 28 Northwood hitting errors and six service errors. Four Cardinals finished with a team-high six kills, including Rylee Zimmer, Madison Thompson, Olivia Waszak, and Sarah Veale.

Kelsey Vittitow recorded a team-high 12 digs, while Peyton Gerstacker had 26 assists and nine digs. Waszak led the Cardinals at the net on defense with four block assists. SVSU hit .191 as a team, while Northwood was .009.

The Cardinals play their third road match in three days, traveling to Wisconsin-Parkside for a make-up match at 3 pm EST on Sunday in Kenosha, Wis.
