Lacrosse keeps rolling with road win at Northern Michigan

Golden Bears have won five of their past six in GLIAC play

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse continued its strong midseason play with a 20-11 road victory at Northern Michigan (3-8, 2-5 GLIAC) on Wednesday evening at the Superior Dome.

Sophomore Lexi Stanley set a pair of program records in the victory, 10 draw controls in the game and 53 draw controls on the season. Stanley also had four ground balls and scored her second goal of the year in the game.

The dominance on the draw was a key for Concordia as NMU took 10 of the first 12 draws last Friday night and as a result held a 5-5 tie in the early minutes. Tonight, Concordia had an 18-14 edge in draw controls and was able to maintain a safe lead for much of the contest as a result.

The win vaults the Golden Bears to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC, tying the program's overall high mark and topping last year's GLIAC win total to establish another new program record.

Concordia has won five of its last six contests on the season as CSP trails Grand Valley State in the league standings by just one game. The Golden Bears are now 6-0 all-time against Northern Michigan, improving their goal margin to +56 in the six contests while scoring at least 20 goals against the Wildcats in three straight meetings and in four of the six in the series.

Concordia used an 8-2 first half scoring stretch to claim a 9-4 lead with 5:44 to play before the break. Junior Maddie Hentges scored four of her five goals during the run to spark the stretch while junior Alina Boyce had one goal and assisted on two others (one to Hentges) during the run as the duo contributed to six of the eight goals. Boyce finished with seven points on four goals and three assists.

Sophomore Lex Seifert also had a pair of goals during the game-changing run while sophomore Margot Coomes capped the run at the 5:44 mark.

The Wildcats wouldn't come closer than four goals the rest of the way, and a second Concordia run blew the game open in the second half.

Northern Michigan cut into Concordia's 12-6 halftime lead by scoring less than a minute into the second half and made it a five goal margin again at 13-8 with 21:08 to play in the contest.

From there, four different Golden Bears scored in a four minute, 19 second stretch of play (Izzy Snow, Lexi Stanley, Boyce, Coomes) to open up a nine goal advantage with 13:41 to go.

In the final tally, Concordia compiled shot advantages of 41-29 overall and 38-25 on goal while junior goalie Katie Lottsfeldt compiled 14 saves in net.

Six Golden Bears had multiple goals (Hentges 5, Boyce 4, Coomes, Snow, Seifert and Kailey Heinl 2) while junior Kaci Reid had a three point game with a goal and two assists.

Northern Michigan was led by Graison Ringlever with five goals and an assist, adding six draw controls and three ground balls. Cam Stilson took the loss in net with 18 saves and 20 goals allowed.

The Golden Bears have a bye this weekend, and return to action next Thursday and Saturday, April 18 and 20 for the final home weekend of the regular season. CSP will host Ashland for a 6 p.m. game under the lights on Thursday night and Indianapolis on Saturday at noon. The games will be played at Sea Foam Stadium.
