Comeback Effort Falls Short in Overtime for Men's Basketball

Wayne State trailed by as many as 19 in the second half.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-8 overall, 3-4 GLIAC) were unable to keep its winning ways going at Purdue Northwest (6-9 overall, 2-5 GLIAC) on Thursday night, falling 86-83 in overtime.  The Warriors trailed by as many as 19 in the second half but WSU stormed back to tie the game and fo where the Pride did enough to secure the victory. 

A career night from Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) was wasted as the redshirt senior notched his first career double-double with a a career-best 31 points and 14 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride jumped out to an 14-3 lead at the 14:48 mark.  Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) pulled WSU within eight with 12:54 remaining by sinking four free throws.  The deficit sat at five at the 9:43 mark, 20-15, after a pair of buckets and a free throws from Henderson.  Henderson continued his offensive barrage with another layup, cutting the home advantage to 20-17 with 9:27 left before halftime.  After the margin was one, 20-19, following a Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) basket, the Warriors trailed by three at the 7:21 mark.  Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) connected on two free throws to keep WSU behind by two, 29-27, with 5:29 to play.  Purdue Northwest controlled the final minutes of the first half and led 45-31 at the break.  

Wayne State started slow in the second half as the Pride scored 10 of the first 15 points and PNW took a 55-36 lead.  The Warriors used a 9-0 run, including an old fashioned three-point play from Henderson, to trim the Pride's lead to 55-45 at the 14:11 mark.  WSU pulled within eight after a layup from Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan).  Henderson continued his career night with a dunk at the 11:32 mark to make it 60-53.  Back-to-back triples from Owens-White brought WSU within six, 65-59, with 9:42 left in the game.  A Murray jumper and a Davis, Jr. basket cut PNW's lead to two, 65-63, at the 7:40 mark.  Wayne State tied the game at 65-65 on two free throws from Owens-White.  A steal plus a fast break three-point play by Henderson gave WSU its first lead of the night, 68-65.  With three minutes to play, Wayne State led 70-67 after a reverse layup from Henderson.  A pair of free throws from Huguley gave the Green & Gold a 74-68 lead with 1:42 left on the clock.  A steal from Davis, Jr. was key as WSU was able to run the clock with under a minute to play.  However, the Pride had possession with 17.5 seconds remaining and a trey from Chandler Spring tied the game with six seconds left to play.  Owens-White's running jumper as time expired drew iron.

In overtime, the Warriors trailed 78-76 with 3:06 to play.  The home lead grew to four at the 2:22 mark.  Henderson made two free throws to trim the deficit to 80-78 with 1:48 to play in the extra session.  Owens-White kept WSU close at 82-81 with a corner trey at the 1:11 mark.  WSU had an opponrtunity to take the lead but were unable to do so as the Pride secured a jump ball with 18 seconds to play.  A Henderson put back cut the home lead to 84-83 with 3.8 seconds remaining.  A pair of free throws from Chase Rankin gave the Pride an 86-83 lead.  Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) nearly tied the game again with a last-second three-point attempt but the bank shot bounced out.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Henderson's 31 points was a game-high and a season-high for Wayne State.  He also collected a career-high 14 rebounds to post his first-ever double-double.  Owens-White made four triples for the fourth straight game and finished with 18 points, while Davis had 13 and Huguley tallied a career-high 11 points.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Timothy Gilmore led PNW with 19 points as Spring finished with 15, Anthony Barnard had 13, Durante Lee scored 11 and Dean Tate chipped in 10.

TEAM STATS
The Pride out-shot the Warriors 51 percent to 38 percent as PNW knocked down 12 three-pointers.
