Bulldogs Register League Home Split Versus Ashland With Victory In Nightcap

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad registered a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home split with visiting Ashland on Monday (April 19) at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs fell in the opener to the Eagles by a 4-0 score, but came back for a 7-4 win in the second game of the league doubleheader.

In the opener, Ashland scored all four of the game's run in the top of the second inning and tallied nine hits while limiting FSU to three in the shutout victory. AU pitcher Jillian Middleton went the distance and struck out seven in the game.

Junior center fielder Paige Kortz tripled for the Bulldogs and had a pair of hits in the setback with left fielder Abby Mitchell also posting a hit.

In game two, the Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the initial inning to grab the lead. After AU tied the game up with three runs of its own in the third, the Bulldogs scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth while holding the Eagles to a single run in the sixth the rest of the way. Both teams had 11 hits in the contest.

The Bulldogs' Kaitlyn Nugent picked up the win, allowing only a single run on seven hits with two strikeouts in four and one-third of an inning of relief action. Kristie Gray pitched two and two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits with four walks.

Kortz and Mitchell along with first baseman Kaitlyn Orme all had two hits in the game for FSU with the Bulldogs also getting a hit fro catcher Ali Magiera, right fielder Evelyn Blood, second baseman Kacey Bouche, designated player Taylor Buiter and shortstop Kodi Ramirez

Buiter drove in two runs for the Bulldogs as did Magiera. Both Blood and third baseman Amara Zukowski also picked up an RBI. FSU got doubles from Mitchell, Buiter and Magiera in the win.

The Bulldogs are slated to hit the road and will face Wayne State on Wednesday (April 21) starting at 3:30 p.m. (ET) for game on with game two scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (ET) in Detroit.
