Laker Tennis Continues Week-Long Trip Against McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams competed against the McKendree University Bearcats on Sunday, March 1 in Lebanon, Ill.  Despite a solid effort from both teams, the Lakers would fall in both the men's and women's competition. 

The Lakers dropped the doubles point to the Bearcats as only the Lakers No. 1 duo of Joe Gilman and Juho Kantola recorded a win. In the singles matches, Joe Gilman, who plays in the Lakers top spot, was able to get a win in the third set 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after a long and intense match. At No. 2, freshman Juho Kantola fell in three close sets by 7-5, 1-6, 6-7 (5). The No. 3 spot, Krishan Taneja was defeated in a three-set match 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 followed by singles No. 4 Ali Sahibzada. Sahibzada strung together back-to-back set wins to beat his opponent 6-0, 6-0. In court No. 5, Harris Irfan Ul Haq fell in the tiebreaker in the third set 3-6, 7-5, 4-10. Diego Penz, the team's No. 6 players, was also defeated in the third partial by 2-6, 7-5, 3-6.

In the women's contest, the team played an exhibition match against the Bearcats in which freshman Riley Gilman got her first collegiate win.

The Lakers will be on the court again tomorrow in Chesterfield, Mo. to play Lindenwood University at 12:00 p.m.
