Ferris State Softball Stays Unbeaten With Two Wins In Illinois

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State Softball team stayed unbeaten as the Bulldogs registered two more wins on Friday (Feb. 19) at the Lewis Dome Invitational to move to 3-0 on the year.

The Bulldogs topped Quincy (Ill.) 3-2 in the first game on Friday before coming back to win an 11-inning thriller by a 10-8 score over Ursuline in the finale.

In the opener, FSU scored three runs in the first inning and then held off Quincy, which managed to score twice in the fifth but could get no closer. The Hawks did hold a 7-6 edge in total hits.

FSU was led at the plate by Kodi Ramirez, who had two hits. The Bulldogs' Kaitlyn Orme along with Taylor Buiter and Madison McLeod all drove in runs.

In the circle, Mckenzie Cleland earned her second win for the Bulldogs by tossing all seven innings. She had 12 strikeouts with a single walk while giving up two runs on seven hits.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs and Ursuline both scored twice in the first before the Arrows pulled ahead 6-2 after four innings of action. FSU came back with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to grab the lead before Ursuline tied the game up with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Finally, FSU plated two runs in the 11th to garner the victory.

Kylie Winkels paced the Bulldogs with four hits while Paige Kortz had three. Ramirez, Orme and Amara Zukowski all had two hits each with Orme, Ali Magiera and Jessica Tucci all driving in two runs.

The Bulldogs got doubles from Magiera, Winkels and Zukowski.

FSU utilized three different pitchers in the game with Kristie Gray allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk in one and two-thirds of an inning. Orme pitched five and one-third innings, giving up four runs on six hits with four K's and two walks. Finally, Cleland tossed four more innings of scoreless work with no hits allowed and four strikeouts to go with two walks.

The Bulldogs will wrap up action at the Lewis Dome Invite on Saturday (Feb. 20) with a pair of games against Findlay and Illinois-Springfield in regional action. The opener is set for a 10 a.m. (ET) start against Findlay with the finale slated to begin at 12 p.m. (ET).
