Men's Basketball Drops a Conference Road Game to Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team dropped an 81-66 game to the Ashland University Eagles in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meeting on Saturday, Feb. 1. 

Lake State jumped out to an early 6-2 lead over the Eagles as Ke'Montrece Collins and C.J. Robinson each made three-point jump shots in the first three minutes of action. The Eagles would take over the game's scoring as they held a 28-10 lead at the 10 minute mark. 

With just over three minutes left in the first half, Collins sparked a nine point run from the Lakers to close the Eagles advantage to 47-32 at the end of the first half. 

C.J. Robinson made a layup in the first minute and Justin Fischer made a three-point jump shot to bring the Lakers with 12 points of the Eagles as the Lakers began their comeback. At 15:01 of the second half, Collins made a three-point jump shot to make it a seven point game (49-42). 

At the midway point of the second half, the Lakers had cut down the lead to just five points as freshman Xander Okerlund netted a three-pointer to make it a 60-52 game with 10 minutes left. The Eagles would answer back to extend their lead back to 10 points (65-55). 

Despite a strong effort from the Lakers to tie up the game, the Eagles would hold onto their lead in the final few minutes of play. Ashland would hold a 70-60 point lead with five minutes and the game would end with the Eagles winning by a score of 81-66.

Collins would end the game as the Lakers point leader with 18 points while also adding four rebounds. Robinson and Fischer would each score 14 points to rank second on the team in points. Okerlund and Ashton Sherrell would share the team lead in rebounds as they each registered seven in the game. 

The Lakers be back at home next weekend to play a pair of GLIAC games at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 8. Thursday's game is against Northwood at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start against Saginaw Valley.
