Ferris State Opens Homestand With Impressive Victory Over Saginaw Valley State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 17th-ranked Ferris State University men's basketball squad opened a four-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) homestand with an impressive 84-65 win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (Feb. 6) evening inside Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs held onto a two-game lead atop the GLIAC North Division as they broke the game open late in the first half, taking a 35-23 edge before outscoring the Cardinals 49-42 over the final 20 minutes of play.

In the victory, FSU nailed 10 three-pointers and went 16-of-19 (84.2%) from the free throw line with four players reaching double-figure scoring.

Junior forward Logan Ryan made his second-straight start for FSU and finished with a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. The Bulldogs also got 14 points and eight boards from junior forward Dorian Aluyi with sophomore forward Mason Pline adding 14 points and five rebounds. Finally, senior center Cole Walker hit a pair of three's and finished with 10 points.

The Bulldogs distributed the ball well with 28 assists on the nine, including nine from freshman point guard Jeremiah Washington, who made his first start in the triumph. Senior guard D'angelo Hughes added five assists to go with his nine points while three others each had three helpers in the game.

Ferris State limited its turnovers to only seven for the evening and the Bulldogs outscored the Cardinals 17-11 in points off turnovers as Saginaw Valley State finished with 13 total. The Bulldogs also came away with 11 steals, including four from Washington, which helped lead to a 18-4 margin in fast break production.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were outrebounded 45-40 for the night, but they also had six blocked shots.

Overall, FSU shot 43.9% from the floor and 38.5% from three-point range while the Cardinals were held to 30.8% shooting and a seven-of26 (26.9%) showing from three-point range.

The Cardinals were led by Darnell Hoskins, Jr., who totaled a game-high 19 points. Delano Smith added 14 points and Myles Belyeu chipped in with 13 points as SVSU fell to 14-8 overall and 8-6 in the GLIAC.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 22-4 on the year and 11-3 in the GLIAC. They also moved to 14-1 in home action at Wink Arena.

Ferris State will host Northwood on Saturday in GLIAC play with tipoff set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
