Men's Tennis Falters 6-1 at No. 5-Saint Leo

The Warriors will travel to Western Michigan on March 15th.

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (8-5 overall) suffered a 6-1 loss at fifth-ranked Saint Leo (8-2 overall) on Tuesday afternoon.

"Unfortunately this top-five team was better than us and got the win," commented head coach Bryan Morrow, "but we are happy with where we are at after this trip.  We feel confident in coming back and getting ready for the GLIACs.

DOUBLES RESULTS
"We completely mixed up the doubles teams today," stated Morrow.  "I haven't been happy with the energy that we have had, but after switching them up today, their energy improved tremendously.  We had some really nice matches."

Sophomores David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) and Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) were first off the courts after falling 6-3 to Nicolas Bacella and Leonardo Vega at No. 3 doubles.

"David and Max played very well against a good team," recalled head coach Bryan Morrow.

Senior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and junior Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) lost their No. 2 doubles match 6-4 to Alexander Parker and Kayne Trustfull.

"Pierre and Niklas played a nice match and put themselves in a good position," stated Morrow.  "They didn't quite execute a couple of shots here and there, but they put themselves in a good spot."

Freshmen Dom Spicer (London, England) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) tallied the lone WSU doubles point (6-4) at the top flight vs. Willem Van den Akker and Aurel Ciocanu.

"Our freshmen played a really great match," remarked Morrow.  "They found themselves down but came storming back.  They played really aggressive and focused."

SINGLES RESULTS
Solar was first off the courts after losing his No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-4 to Trustfull.

At No. 4 singles, Spicer suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Ghali Mensour, who is ranked 45th in the nation.

Rink fell 6-1, 6-2 to Bacella at No. 2 singles.

"Max had a little bit of a rough day," commented Morrow.  "His opponent was very solid.  They played a lot of great points but unfortunately the other player got the better end of it."

At the top singles spot, Renaudie was edged 6-4, 6-2 by Parker.

"Pierre played a really nice match against a tough opponent," stated Morrow.  "He had a little too much power for Pierre."

Laws dropped his No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-4 to Athanasios Bilis.

"David, Luke, and Dom played guys who were similar to them, but just a little better," said Morrow.

At No. 3 singles, Karcz notched a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Ciocanu.  Karcz is ranked 18th in the nation, while Ciocanu is 21st.

"Niklas played a great match and won in straight sets," remarked Morrow.  "He got back into form and is feeling healthy again."
