Baseball Wins Twice on Sunday, Completes Sweep

The Warriors improve to 8-2 and are in first place in the GLIAC.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (21-8, 8-2 GLIAC) completed a four-game sweep of Saginaw Valley State (16-14, 7-5 GLIAC) on Sunday by winning both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 11-3.  The Green & Gold have won seven straight games and sit atop of the GLIAC standings.

GAME ONE (W, 7-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals scored first once again and led 1-0 on an RBI single from Andrew Burke in the top of the second inning.

WSU responded with a run in the bottom of the third inning.  Back-to-back errors allowed a Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) single to tie the game at 1-1.

Two straight doubles in the top of the fourth inning put SVSU back on top 2-1.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) started the bottom of the fourth with an infield single before back-to-back walks.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) doubled home a pair of runs and Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) made it 4-2 with an RBI single into left field.

Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) tripled to begin the bottom of the fifth inning.  Three consecutive walks allowed a run to score and another tally was added on a fielder's choice RBI from Maury.


SVSU strung together three hits in the top of the sixth to plate two runs and trim its deficit to 7-4.  The Cardinals went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

AT THE PLATE
Maury paced the offense with three RBI.  Foley, MacLean, Travis and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) all drove in runs.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) (2-1) allowed four runs in six innings and struck out three batters.  He was touched for nine hits, walked one and hit another.

Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) earned his fourth save of the season by working a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout.

GAME TWO (W, 11-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning aided by two hits and four walks.  Two wild pitches allowed the first pair of runs to cross and a bases-loaded walk to Finkbeiner accounted for the third.

Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the second inning.  An RBI double later in the frame from Tanderys extended the home advantage to 5-0.  Tanderys added another RBI with with a groundout in the bottom of the fourth inning.

WSU added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  A double from Finkbeiner started the rally.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) singled home a run and a two-run double by Foley made it 9-0.  Tanderys drove in two more runs in the inning with a single into center field.

The Cardinals scored three late runs on two hits in the top of the ninth inning.

AT THE PLATE
Tanderys drove in four runs in two hits, while Foley went 2-for-4 with two RBI.  MacLean, Finkbeiner and Miller all had two hits.


ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (4-1) was very sharp not allowing a run in seven innings.  He struck out six batters and surrendered just three hits, while walking three.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was the first out of the bullpen and did not allow a run in his inning of work.  Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) allowed three runs (two earned) in 1/3 of an inning.

Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) collected the final two outs.
