Laker Tennis Wraps Up Weekend of Nonconference Matches

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's and women's tennis teams competed against the Findlay University Oilers and the Tiffin University Dragons on Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12. The men's team fell to the Oilers on Friday by a final score of 4-3 and followed with a loss to the Dragons on Saturday by a 5-2 final score. The women's team dropped their match to Tiffin by a 5-2 score. 

In the match against Findlay, the Lakers dropped the doubles point as the Oilers won each of the three matches. Juho Kantola, the Lakers No. 1 singles player, won his match over Wilfredo Lara by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. The Lakers No. 3 player, Krishan Taneja, also won his match in two sets for the Lakers. Taneja won the first set in a tiebreaker and clinched the match win with a 6-2 second set win. The Lakers final point came in the No. 5 singles match as Aaron Osmond won the match in a decisive three sets. 

In the match against Tiffin, the Lakers took the doubles point in the match. The team's top pair of Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan won by a score 7-6 and the third pair of Diego Penz and Xavier Vicent Navarro won their set by a score of 6-2. In the singles competition, the Lakers No. 5 player, Harris Rehan won his match in two sets by scores of 7-6 and 6-4. 

The women's team dropped the doubles point against the Dragons as only the team's third pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole won their match. In singles play, Julia Fraile Ration, the Lakers No. 6 player, won her match in a decisive third set by scores of 1-6, 6-0, and 12-10. 

What's Next

After this weekend's matches, both teams will have a few weeks off before their annual Spring Break trip. The Lakers will kick off the week-long schedule of matches at Hillsdale on Saturday, March 5 with the women playing at 9:00 a.m. and the men's competition starting at 1:00 p.m.
