SVSU rolls Felician, falls to Augustana in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team split a pair of games at The Spring Games on Friday in Auburndale, Fla.

The Cardinals rolled to a 9-1 win in the first game of the day against Felician University. The Cardinals fell behind early in the second game to Augustana University and fell 6-3. The split moves SVSU to 9-5 overall this season as the team prepares for its final day of competition in Florida.

Game One Breakdown:

  • SVSU got rolling early with RBIs in the first inning from Jackie Popko and Blasia Moyler to go up 2-0.
  • Cam Coonan singled home the third run of the game in the third before Moyler hit a two-run home run to left to make it 5-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
  • SVSU added three runs in the fourth with RBIs for Sarah Gersch, Alexis Gills, and Popko.
  • Felician broke through with a run in the fifth, but Paige Kolinski ended the game with a lead-off home run in the fifth to put the Cardinals up 9-1.
  • Jaclyn Groves (4-1) tossed all five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, striking out 11.
  • Sara Moos, Popko, and Coonan each finished with two hits, while Moyler recorded three RBIs.

Game Two Breakdown:

  • Augustana scored the first six runs of the games, including two in the first and four in the second.
  • SVSU got on the board with an RBI single in the third.
  • Popko hit a solo home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-2.
  • The Cardinals got one more back in the seventh on a solo home run from Gills.
  • Emily Depew (3-3) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits, striking out two.
  • Alyssa Muench was strong in relief, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing one unearned run, on four hits, and striking out three.
  • Gills was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and one RBI.

The Cardinals close their stay in Florida with two games on Saturday starting against Concordia University-St. Paul at 12:15 pm, followed by a matchup with Shepherd University at 2:45 pm.
