Women's Basketball Falls to Wayne State in a Road Meeting

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team suffered a road loss to the Wayne State Warriors by a final score of 79-52 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on Thursday, Jan. 30 in Detroit, Mich.

Abigail Ostman opened the game's scoring as she made a three point jump shot to put the Lakers ahead at 8:48 of the first quarter. After Lexie Khon made a jump shot to put the Lakers up 5-0, the Warriors would score 12 straight points to go up 12-5 at the halfway point of the quarter. Claire Radtke scored her first two points to break the Warriors scoring streak but Wayne State would answer with another seven straight points to take a 19-7 lead over the Lakers. The first quarter would end with the Lakers trailing the Warriors, 23-13. 

In the second quarter, Radtke would sink two three-point jump shots in the first two minutes of action but the Warriors would respond to keep their lead at 11 points. In the next stretch of play, the Lakers would fall behind by a margin of 15 points before starting a rally to close in on the Warriors. At the end of the first half, Wayne State held a 43-32 lead over the Lakers. 

At 8:09 of the third quarter, Ostman would make a three point basket to bring the Lakers back within single digits of the Warriors (46-37). Wayne State's offense would extend and build upon their lead in the second half of the third quarter as the Warriors were ahead 60-41 after 30 minutes of play.

The Lakers were not able to overcome the lead that the Warriors built up throughout the game as they were outscored 19-12 in the last ten minutes of action to drop the game by a final score of 79-53.

Radtke finished the game as the Laker points leaders as she posted 17 points going 7-for-14 in the game. The senior guard also recorded six rebounds and an assist against the Warriors. Rebecca Villanueva played a solid game for the Lakers as she registered 11 points and four rebounds.
