Men's Tennis Notches 6-1 Victory at Walsh in Season-Opener

WSU recorded wins at each doubles flight.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (1-0 overall) notched a 6-1 victory in its season-opening match at Walsh (2-4 overall) on Saturday afternoon.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Freshman Dom Spicer (London, England) and sophomore David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) were first off the courts after tallying a 6-1 win against Clemens Wagner and Filipp Kulynych at No. 2 doubles.

Junior co-captain Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and freshman Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) secured the doubles point for WSU after a 6-2 victory at the first flight versus Jakob Riglewski and Joao Campos.

Senior co-captain Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) and sophomore Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) were last off the courts, recording a 6-2 win against Guilherme Carneiro and Pedro Campos.

"We started with a lot of energy and played great doubles on every court," commented head coach Bryan Morrow.  "We played aggressively and got ahead early on all courts.  I could not be happier with how the guys played."

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Laws was first to finish after nearly sweeping Kulynych at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-0).

"Luke was solid," recalled Morrow.  "He started off okay and then gained momentum.  Luke played a great match from top to bottom."

At No. 3 singles, Renaudie notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wagner.

"Pierre looked good," Morrow stated.  "He was coming to the net quite a bit and volleying really well.  Pierre played a nice, smart match and took care of business."

Spicer was next to finish, winning his No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-3 versus Alex Medina.

"Dom won comfortably," remarked Morrow.  "He had a little hiccup in the first set, but pretty much rolled after that.  In his first singles match for the Warriors, he showed maturity and competitiveness."

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) tallied a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win after a second-set tiebreaker vs. Dawson Drummond.

"Max had some really big serves," Morrow commented.  "His opponent hung in there and competed really well against him, but Max pulled it out in the second-set tiebreaker.  I think that he was a little nervous in his first match, but he got through it."

Karcz fell in a third set against Riglewski at No. 1 singles (6-2, 2-6, 2-6).

"Niklas' opponent has played a bunch of matches already this season," stated Morrow.  "It was the first match for Niklas and he played a little nervous.  His opponent was very aggressive and played smart."

Solar was last off the courts after notching a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carneiro at No. 6 singles.

"David had a great match,"  Morrow said.  "He dominated with his serves and returned really well.  David was very aggressive and moved well after recovering from his injury from earlier this year.  I was really happy with how he looked."

WARRIOR STRONG
This season, Morrow is implementing something new:  a Match Ball.  Each time WSU competes, Morrow will select one Warrior to receive the Match Ball following play, recognizing them for their hard work, outstanding performance, leadership, etc.

This match, Spicer was the recipient after winning both his No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles matches.

"Dom earned Player of the Match because of the way that he competed," stated Morrow.  "He played strong at No. 4 singles and got his first regular-season win as a freshman."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Findlay on Sunday, Feb. 9th, for a 12:30 p.m. match.
