Cardinals open GLIAC season with loss at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The start of the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season began for the Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team at Northwood University Saturday in Midland, Mich.

The Cardinals fell 6-1 to the Timberwolves despite several strong performances from the SVSU lineup. The loss drops SVSU to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC.

Highlights:

  • Nicole Johnson picked up the lone win of the day for the Cardinals, taking her match at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-3.
  • Adiya Young was edged out at No. 6 singles in a close match falling, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 (TB).
  • Sara Neves and Johnson fell in a tightly contested match 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

NOTE: Due to a withdraw, the Cardinals defaulted at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles.

SVSU continues the GLIAC season in the team's first home match of the conference season against Grand Valley State University at 1 pm Friday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
