WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team opened its trip to Florida with a win over the University of Central Missouri on Sunday in Winter Haven, Fla.
Home runs from Sara Moos and Madison Campagna lifted the Cardinals to a 6-4 win. The victory moves SVSU to 5-2 to start the season. The Cardinals were scheduled to play Seton Hill in the second game of the day, but the contest was canceled due to a shortage of umpires.
Game Breakdown:
- SVSU got the scoring started in the first inning with a solo home run from Sara Moos.
- The Jennies took the lead with two runs in the top of the second.
- The Cardinals went in front for good with five runs in the bottom of the second, starting with an RBI single from Jessica Kreuzer.
- Maddie Campagna hit the first home run of her career to score two runs to move SVSU in front 5-2 later in the second.
- RBIs from Sarah Gersch and Moos pushed the SVSU capped off the second.
- The Jennies scored a run in the third and fifth, but SVSU held on for the win.
- Moos and Leah Denome each finished with two hits for SVSU.
- Jaclyn Groves (2-1) got the win for the Cardinals on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned on six hits, walking one, and striking out three.
- Julia Mundy (1) earned the save, pitching 2.2. innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
