Lacrosse embarks on spring trip to the southeast

Golden Bears to play four games in three states in eight days

ST. PAUL, Minn. - After two big snowfalls in a three day span this week, the Concordia-St. Paul lacrosse team (0-1) packed up and hopped on a plane to the southeastern part of the country where it will play a four game spring trip schedule starting on Monday at Tusculum (Tenn.).

Concordia opened the year against one of the elite programs in Division II women's lacrosse, falling 19-7 to #3 Lindenwood at home on Friday night.

It was Concordia's only non-conference home game, and they'll complete the non-conference schedule on this spring trip with four road contests at Division II opposition.

In the loss, freshman Raelyn Korinek netted a hat trick in her debut while leading the team in shot attempts (6) and shots on goal (5). Sophomore Kailey Heinl also had a two goal performance, last year's scoring leader with 43 goals.

Sophomore Maddie Hentges had a three point game with a goal and a team-high two assists and is coming off a year as the leader in total points with 53 (38g, 15a).

Defensively, freshman Lexi Stanley led hte team with a pair of caused turnovers and added two ground balls while starting alongside returning standout sophomores Cassidy Leininger, Kylie Christensen and Sara Stickler. Leininger also had a pair of ground balls while Christensen had one of each (CT & GB).

In the net, it was sophomore Katie Lottsfeldt getting the start and making nine first half saves. She also had a team high six ground balls and a caused turnover. She played the first 42:30 in net before freshman Claire Hagen made her debut and registered three saves and three ground balls.

SCOUTING TUSCULUM (Mon., 4 p.m. CT)
Tusculum, Tennesee

The Pioneers are in their fourth season as a Division II varsity program, beginning with the 2015 season. They produced back-to-back winning seasons in years one and two, going 10-5 overall (5-3 SAC) and 11-6 (4-4 SAC) before finishing 5-12 (3-5 SAC) last season.

Tusculum is off to a 2-2 start during non-conference play, winning their first and last games and dropping a pair in the middle. The Pioneers have been a high scoring squad thus far, reaching double-digit goals all four games with a high of 17 in a 17-5 win at home over Lees-McRae in the season opener. The Pioneers are also 2-0 at home, topping North Greenville 13-12 on Saturday.

Through four games, Juliette Cusano leads the Pioneers with 11 goals and 13 points while Rachel Holmes has also reached double-digit goals with 10 along with an assist. Savannah Elliott (6g, 2a) and Madison Malone (2g, 6a) round out four players averaging at least two points per game.

Malone also leads the team in ball control with 15 ground balls and nine caused turnovers while second on the team with 19 draw controls. Cusano leads the team with 23 draw draw controls and is tied for second with Holmes with 11 ground balls.

In the cage, the Pioneers have rotated three players in at different times with freshman Kate Pipkin leading the team in minutes (145:33) in goal to go with a 35.9 save percentage, allowing 25 goals with 14 saves while playing in at least parts of all four games (two starts). Senior Brooke Wagner has also made a pair of starts, playing 80:31 minutes in parts of three games with a 29.2 save percentage, allowing 17 goals with seven saves.

SCOUTING MARS HILL (Wed., 2 p.m. CT)
Mars Hill, North Carolina

Mars Hill is in its inaugural season of Division II women's lacrosse, announcing the addition of the program on August 10, 2016, the same day the university announced the hiring of its first head coach, Kristina Llanes, who spent her first year on staff recruiting and other behind the scenes program operations.

Llanes spent her previous four seasons at Kennesaw State University, also a brand new program competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Llanes was also head coach at Presbyterian College (S.C.) for three years, joining the program in just its second year. She also was head coach at SUNY Maritime College (N.Y.) where she helped launch the program, spending three years as coach.

The Lions are 1-1 on the year, winning their season opener 13-10 at home against Brevard before falling 12-8 at home to Barton.

Through two games, Olivia Hokanson leads the program with eight goals and 10 points while Kiersten Foust has seven goals and eight points. Molly Tobias adds five points with two goals and three assists.

In the middle of the field, Tobias leads the club with six ground balls, six draw controls and five caused turnovers. Hokanson has matched her on the draw with six, while adding four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Scout Black has matched Tobias with six ground balls and three assists.

In the net, Alexandria Holleran has played all 120 minutes, recording a stout 46.3 save percentage with 19 saves.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN WESLEYAN (Thu., 4 p.m.)
Central, South Carolina
The Warriors are in their inaugural season, picked to finish 10th in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, a spot behind Barton who defeated Concordia's Wednesday opponent Mars Hill.

Southern Wesleyan announced the addition of the sport on April 21, 2016 and just a couple months later during the summer, the university was approved for full NCAA Division II membership, a process that began on campus in 2013-14. The athletics department spent two years in a candidacy phase and last year as a provisional season. They were also a transitional member of the Conference Carolinas that past two seasons but ineligible for conference and NCAA awards and conference championships. This marks their first year of eligibility for full league championships and awards.

In October of 2016, they hired Lindsey Schneider as the first coach in program history, coming from North Greenville University where she was an assistant coach in 2015-16. She previously spent two years as a high school coach, first an an assistant before head coach duties in 2014-15.

The Warriors are off to an 0-3 start in year one, falling at home to Oklahoma Baptist (13-1), Lees-McRae (12-3) and Erskine (19-9).

In the three games, Abigail Welch leads the team with seven goals and eight points, adding six ground balls and nine turnovers. Jairy Sandoval has five points (3g, 2a) and leads the team with 15 draw controls, adding six ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

Kaeleigh McDaniel handles net-minding duties, making 54 saves in three games (18.0/game) with a strong 55.1 save percentage.

SCOUTING WINGATE (Sat., 12 p.m.)
Wingate, North Carolina
The Bulldogs are in their fifth year as a Division II women's lacrosse program and have steadily improved each season, opening with a 2-6 overall (1-5 SAC) record in 2014 before a seven win improvement in year two (9-8, 4-4 SAC). The last two years have been strong for the Bulldogs, going 12-5 and 13-5 overall with 6-2 finishes each year in the SAC.

Wingate was picked to finish second in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll, tied with Lenoir-Rhyne and receiving one first place vote.

Wingate is led by All-SAC Preseason First Team selections senior attach Shannon O'Neal and junior goalie Arion Pierre while junior midfielder Emily Ketron was an All-SAC Preseason Second Team selection.

The Bulldogs are off to a 1-2 start and are 0-2 at home, picking up a 15-8 road win at Chowan University last Saturday. They are coming off a 19-8 home loss to #11 Rollins in a game that feature a 10-0 run by the nationally-ranked Rollins squad.

In three games, Wingate is led by Kendall Wells with 13 goals (14 points) while Casey Roux has scored seven goals (eight points). In goal, Pierre has played all 180 minutes with 44 saves and a 52.4 save percentage.

The Bulldogs will host Mount Olive on Wednesday prior to bringing the Golden Bears to town.
