Miranda’s Dazzling Effort Leads Pioneers, Stock to First Win

Box Score

Junior Rubem Miranda recorded a goal and an assist and freshman Sam Tonelli upped his point streak to three games with a goal of his own as Malone's men's soccer team defeated Ohio Dominican University (3-3-1, 2-2 GLIAC) by a score of  2-1 on Friday afternoon to give head coach Brian Stock his first career win at the school.

Malone (1-4, 1-3 GLIAC) connected on the game's first goal in the 7th minute thanks to some beautiful build up play. Junior midfielder Stephen Wannah started the play with an entry pass into forward Kelvin Aquino's feet. Aquino held off a defender and flicked a back heel pass onto the path of a streaking Rubem Miranda who then cut the ball back to the penalty spot for Tonelli to hit first time into the goal. It was the freshman's second goal of the year.

Ohio Dominican threatened to equalize late in the first half but Malone remained poised in thwarting off a flurry of Panther chances before halftime.

Miranda then decided to take the game into his own hands in the second half. With Malone clinging to a one goal lead, the Brazilian picked up the ball on the right flank, split a pair of defenders with his dribble and ripped a shot that ricocheted off the bottom of the crossbar and over the goal line for his second goal of the year.

Ohio Dominican added a late goal in the game's final minute but it was all for not as Malone secured the win over the Panthers 2-1.

Felipe Monteiro was steady in net for the Pioneers registering eight saves. Miranda and Aquino were dangerous going forward all game long, each attempting four shots at goal. Ohio Dominican held a 25-12 advantage in shots and 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Malone will look to make it two wins in a row on Sunday, Sep. 23 when they play Lake Erie College at Pioneer Field at 1:00 pm.
