Baseball Scores Three in Ninth to Stun Ashland

DETROIT -- The 19th-ranked Wayne State University baseball program (24-8 overall, 8-5 GLIAC) hosted sixth-ranked Ashland (27-5 overall, 10-2 GLIAC) for the first of four games on Friday at Harwell Field and the Warriors used a three-run ninth inning to come back and win 5-4 in thrilling fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles looked poised to take an early lead as they loaded the bases in the top of the first inning.  A fly out to left fielder Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) who then threw out the runner at home trying to tag up from third ended the rally with a double play.

Ashland scored two runs on two hits, three walks and a WSU error in the top of the second inning.  The Warriors managed to leave the bases loaded to stay within striking distance.  The visitors added a run in the fourth inning.

Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) connected for his 32nd career home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  That blast leaves him four shy of matching the program record, currently held by WSU Hall of Famer Jon Weisman (36 / 2003-07).

Carson Mittermaier sent a solo home run of his own over the wall in right center field to give AU a 4-1 advantage.  The Green & Gold trimmed the deficit to 4-2 on an RBI groundout by Ramirez in the bottom of the seventh inning.  WSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth but AU was able to escape with the lead intact.

A 4-6-3 double play helped Wayne State end the top of the ninth inning and send the momentum into the home dugout.  Ramirez drew a one-out walk before Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) walked with two outs.  Down to game's final strike, Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) doubled to the wall in left field to tie the game before Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) slapped an RBI single through the right side to send in the game-winning run.

AT THE PLATE
Finkbeiner finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Kelly and Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) both picked up two hits apiece.

ON THE MOUND
Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) allowed two earned runs in an inning and 2/3.  Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) picked up the slack by working six and 2/3 innings of relief and striking out seven, while allowing two earned runs.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) (3-2) worked the final 2/3 of an inning and did not allow a hit.

UP NEXT
The two teams will meet twice on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
