Men's Basketball Falters with Slow Second Half at Lake Superior

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-3 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) dropped Saturday's game 67-63 at Lake Superior State (5-3 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) inside Cooper Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to Thursday's game at Ferris State, Wayne State started fast and led 4-0 at the 18:23 mark following baskets from sophomore Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and freshman Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.).  Graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) connected from deep to extend the advanatage to 10-4 and another triple, this one from Marshall, made it 16-6 with 13:34 left before halftime.  After a Marshall layup gave the Green & Gold a 12-point lead, the Lakers stormed back to trim the deficit to two, 18-16, at the 9:54 mark.  Two points from Talbot with 9:17 left before halftime slowed LSSU's momentum and pushed WSU ahead 20-16.  Back-to-back buckets from Gordon ended a 7-0 run, extending the visitor's lead to 25-16 at the 7:34 mark.  Senior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) knocked down a 15-foot jumper, giving WSU a 27-19 advantage and the Warriors answered twice when the Lakers cut the margin to four.  First with a Talbot jumper and then on a jumper by freshman Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) with 3:28 remaining.  A three-pointer from senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave Wayne State a 35-26 lead at the 2:44 mark.  WSU went to the locker room leading 35-28.

A Neely layup made it 41-31 at the 18-minute mark of the second half but Lake Superior State used an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the day, 42-41, with 12:53 left to play.  The run reached 16-2, giving the Lakers a 48-43 advantage a three-point play by Ke'Montrece Collins.  The momentum stayed with the home team as LSSU led 52-43 as the run increased to 20-2 with seven minutes to play in regulation.  The teams traded baskets down the stretch but a triple by Neely brought WSU withing five, 57-52, at the 3:49 mark.  The deficit stayed at five after two free throws by Neely with 2:42 remaining but the Green & Gold could not get closer than five until a three-point play trimmed the home lead to four with 17 seconds to play.  A three-pointer by Marshall at the nine-second mark made it 65-63 but the comeback attempt would run out of steam as LSSU won 67-63.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
All five starters scored in double figures.  Neely finished with a team-best 16 points powered by four three-pointers.  Gordon tallied 13 points, while Marshall, Murray and Talbot all chipped in with 10 points each.  Murray grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, while Grant contributed nine boards.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Collins had 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Fischer poured in 16 points and Jackson Schrameyer finished with 10 points.
