BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-8 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) traveled to sixth-ranked Ferris State (15-3 overall, 10-0 GLIAC) on Friday night and the Warriors fell in three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 28-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State trailed 5-3 to begin the first set after a kill from
Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II). Â
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) kept the Warriors close, 10-8, with a kill before Ferris State stretched its lead to 17-12. Â Three straight points by WSU pulled the visitors within four, 20-16. Â However, the Bulldogs would control the remainder of the game and win 25-19.
The Green & Gold won the first three points of the second set. Â A service ace from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) gave the Warriors a 5-3 advantage. Â FSU led 13-10 but back-to-back errors later in the set trimmed the margin to one, 17-16. Â A kill from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) kept the Warriors within striking distance at 20-17 but the Bulldogs would once again win by a score of 25-19.
FSU led the third set 6-5 after a kill from Frazee and a combo block from Frazee and Richardson tied the set at 7-7. Â A kill from Richardson gave WSU its first lead of the period, 9-8, as a 5-0 run pushed Wayne State's lead to 12-8. Â
Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) kept the momentum with the Green & Gold as her kill have WSU a 15-11 lead. Â The Bulldogs tied the set at 16-16. Â The game was still tied at 18-18 and 19-19 before FSU took a 21-19 lead. Â A point from Krenz cut FSU's lead to 23-22 and Richardson tied the set at 23-23 with another kill. Â An error by the Bulldogs made it 24-23 Warriors but Ferris State broke serve and tied the set at 24-24. Â After trading points down the stretch, FSU completed the sweep with a 28-26 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Malewicz finished with a team-high 10 kills, while
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) tallied 30 assists. Â
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) anchored the defense with 12 digs.
