Preview: Men's Tennis Begins Fall Season at the ITA Midwest Regionals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team will open the fall season at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Regionals this weekend. The three-day event will be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. Matches will begin on Friday, Sept. 24 and the tournament will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 26.

Eight Lakers will be competing in the doubles competition this weekend including Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan, who will be playing in the top A draw. Kantola and Rehan are scheduled to play in the first round at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lakers will have two doubles pairs playing in the Draw B bracket. Freshman Raul Velasco Garcia and Xavier Vicent Navarro, the No. 1 seed in the B tournament, will open the doubles competition at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Aaron Osmond and Ali Sahibzada will also represent the Lakers in the B draw and are also slated to open play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The final Laker pair of Diego Penz and Krishan Taneja will play in the C bracket and will play their first match at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. 

Singles competition will feature nine Lakers with Kantola and Vicent Navarro representing the Lakers in the Draw A tournament. Both Lakers will play their first match on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.

Sahibzada, Velasco Garcia, and Taneja will represent the Lakers in Draw B. Sahibzada is set to open the round for the Lakers as he competes at 8:30 a.m. on Friday while Velasco Garcia follows with a 10:00 a.m. match time. Taneja is scheduled to play an 11:30 a.m. match.

In Draw C singles, the Lakers will have four student-athletes competing. Rehan and freshman Logan Brown will both play at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Penz and Osmond are both slated for a 2:00 p.m. match on Friday. 

Following the opening rounds of the ITA Midwest Regionals, the winner will advance to the next round of the main draw they are playing in. Following a first-round loss, the doubles pair or singles player will move onto the consolation bracket.
