WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- SVSU's Softball team continued its spring Florida trip on Monday (Mar. 2) with a pair of games versus Concordia-St. Paul and Seton Hill. The Cardinals lost a close 3-1 game in the opener before bouncing back with a solid 8-0 victory over Seton Hill in game number two.
The split puts the Cardinals at 8-2 overall on the season through 10 games. It marks the program's best start through 10 games since the 2011 season, which was also 8-2.
Game #1 - Concordia - St. Paul
The Bears struck first in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 2-0 edge.
Saginaw Valley responded in the 6th inning, getting a run on an RBI fielder's choice grounder from Julia Salisbury, trimming the deficit in half at 2-1 after the bases-loaded threat.
CSP took advantage and capitalized on an error in the bottom of the 6th, scoring another run to make the score 3-1 heading into the final frame.
The Cardinals had runners reach first and second with two outs but were unable to capitalize and would drop the game by that same 3-1 score.
SVSU had four hits in the game, with Shelby Misiak, Meagan VerVaecke, Blasia Moyler and Sarah Gersch all recording one-apiece. Salisbury had the lone RBI for the Cards. Jackie Popko scored the only run and walked twice while Misiak reached on a pair of walks as well.
Julia Mundy (2-2) took the loss in the circle, working 6.0 innings. She allowed three runs (1 ER) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Game #2 - Seton Hill
Popko got the scoring rolling in the 1st, drilling a solo home run for a 1-0 lead. Alex Roob then had a double to left field that scored Misiak and Salisbury to push the lead to 3-0.
An RBI bunt single from VerVaecke and an RBI single from Sabrina Sage extended the lead over the Griffins to 5-0 in the last of the 3rd inning.
The 4th inning saw Kael Prickett knock a pinch-hit, three-run long ball to make the score 8-0 in SVSU's favor.
The Cardinal defense closed it out in the top of the 5th, finishing the game off with the eight run victory.
Emily Depew (3-0) remained unbeaten on the season after pitching five scoreless innings, surrendering only a single hit. She had five strikeouts and just one walk.
Popko finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI on the solo shot. Roob had two hits with a double and two RBI. Prickett had the big three-run home run for SV and Sage added two hits with an RBI. VerVaecke had a hit and RBI while Salisbury had a hit and scored twice. Misiak walked twice and scored two runs.
