Volleyball Swept at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (4-7 GLIAC) lost in three sets at Ashland (7-6 GLIAC) on Thursday night.  The Eagles won set one (25-10), set two (25-20) and set three (25-16).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ashland won the first seven points of the opening set and eventually led 14-1.  Wayne State was never able to find its footing and fell 25-10.

The second set was much more competitive and the Green & Gold trailed 8-6 after a point from redshirt junior Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.).  Another kill from VanderWal kept WSU close at 17-14.  The Warriors trimmed the home advantage to 19-17, after a point from redshirt sophomore Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  However, AU would take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-20 victory.

AU led 7-3 to start the third set and eventually 14-7.  A kill from freshman Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) trimmed the Eagles' lead to 21-14 but the momentum stayed with the home team and Ashland completed the sweep by winning 25-16.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kray paced the offensive attack with seven kills and hit .333.  Junior Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 22 assists, while sophomore Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) led the roster with 14 digs.
