Ferris State Tennis Squads Open Florida Trip With Decisive Wins

Big Rapids, Mich. - Both the Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads started their annual spring break trip in impressive fashion as each squad posted a 6-1 win over different foes on Tuesday (March 8) in Florida.

The Bulldog men's squad topped Dallas Baptist 6-1 in their first outing in the Sunshine State while the women's team notched a 6-1 triumph over Winona State (Minn.).

The FSU men stayed perfect at 7-0 on the year with the win and the women's squad moved to 4-2 overall this year with its third win in a row.

"On the men's side, we were very happy with the way their fought for it being their first match outdoors in over five months and it was a great opening match of the week for us," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "The women also played their first match outdoors in five months and it was fun to get more players in the lineup while we rested some others with lingering injuries so we can make it thru a long week of tennis."

The Bulldog men's squad swept the doubles point against Dallas Baptist for the initial point of the match and came away with victories in five of the six singles flights. Four of the five singles wins came in straight-sets for the Bulldogs with DBU's lone win coming at two singles.

Meanwhile, the women's team captured two of the three doubles positions for the opening point of its match and proceeded to win five singles contests with the fifth flight claimed by the Warriors due to retirement. FSU's five singles wins included a pair in third-set tiebreakers.

Both Ferris State squads will head to Saint Leo (Fla.) on Wednesday (March 9) for non-conference matches beginning at 3 p.m. (ET).
