#6 Grand Valley defeats Saginaw Valley in Thursday night action

ALLENDALE -- In another road GLIAC matchup, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team faced the No. 6 team in the country in Grand Valley State University. The Lakers controlled the game throughout, claiming a 72-34 win at the GVSU Fieldhouse. 

The Lakers had a solid advantage through 10 minutes of action, taking a 23-9 lead over Saginaw Valley after the first quarter was complete. Mariah Cook led the way for the Cards, scoring three points and grabbing three rebounds in the first. 

GVSU tacked-on another 19 points in the second quarter and held SVSU to six. That put the halftime score at 42-15. The Lakers shot 57.1% from the floor through the first 20 minutes while the Cardinals hit on just 23.1% of their tries.

Mariah Cook led the way for the visitors in the opening half, scoring five points and adding four rebounds. 

The second half began with the Lakers posting a 21-11 edge in the third quarter, giving them a 63-26 lead heading into the fourth. 

The fourth quarter was a low-scoring affair, with GV posting a 9-8 edge to seal the 72-34 victory.

  • GVSU shot 50.9% for the game while SVSU hit on just 24.5% of its shots.
  • Cook earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after registering team-highs of 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Maddie Maloney added eight points with four boards.
  • Maddie Barrie added a team-high six boards while Tyler Scheid added five rebounds.

Saginaw Valley returns home on Saturday (Feb. 15) to begin a four game home stand to finish the regular season. The Cardinals host Davenport University at O'Neill Arena in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
