Preview: Women's Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season at ITA Midwest Regionals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team will be traveling to Indianapolis, Ind. to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Regionals this weekend. The three-day event will be hosted by the University of Indianapolis and will be held at the Center Grove High School and Center Grove North Middle School in Greenwood, Ind. Matches will begin on Saturday, Sept. 18 and the tournament will conclude on Monday, Sept. 20. 

Eight Lakers will compete in the doubles competition including Milena Baigorria and Maddie Whip, who will be playing in the Draw A bracket. Baigorria and Whip will begin play at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday in the opening round of 32 pairs. The Lakers will have three doubles pairs in Draw B. Nadege Koua and Muskaan Ranjan, Claudia Sole and Keegan Malpass, and Julie Fraile Raton and Riley Gilman are all scheduled to open the first round of play at 9:00 a.m.

Singles competition will start on Saturday afternoon and five Lakers will be participating. Baigorria will match up against Findlay's Laiying Alvarado at 11:15 a.m. in Draw A while teammate Koua will also play in the A Draw. Koua will play against Sina Skjelstad, a sophomore from the University of Illinois Springfield, at 12:30 p.m. 

Ranjan, Whip, and Sole will represent the Lakers in Draw B. Ranjan is set to play Ferris State's Patricia Martin Gomez at 11:15 a.m. in the round of 32. Whip, who will be competing in her first competition at the collegiate level, will take on Samantha Stephenson, also from Ferris State. Whip's match is set for an 11:30 a.m. start. Sole will round out the Lakers competing in singles play as she is set for a 12:30 p.m. match against Hillsdale's Courtney Rittel. 

Following the opening day of the tournament, the competition will advance into a round of 16, followed by a quarterfinal, semifinal, and final round. Following a loss, the doubles pair or singles player will move onto the consolation bracket.
