Men's Basketball Wins a Thriller Over Davenport, 60-57

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team started the year with a thrilling 60-57 win over the Davenport University Panthers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on Thursday, Jan. 2 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

At the close of the first half, the Lakers led their conference rival by a score of 31-25. The Lakers would grab the lead (3-2) for the first time in the game when sophomore guard C.J. Robinson made a three point jump shot. Five minutes into play, the Lakers extended their lead to 13-8. The Panthers would close the scoring margin in the next stretch of play to eventually regain the lead, going ahead 15-14 at 10:44 of the half. 

Jackson Schrameyer would make a layup at 5:34 of the first half to put the Lakers ahead by a point (22-21) as the half continued to be evenly matched between the two teams. Schrameyer's two-point shot would begin the Lakers run of 11 straight points in the closing few minutes of the opening half. Davenport would end out the half with a pair of jump shots to head into the second half trailing the Lakers by a score of 31-25.

Brandon Allen would open the second half with a three point jump shot to put the Lakers up, 34-25. At the 15 minute mark of the half, Schrameyer would score his second straight layup to increase the Lakers lead by 13 points (42-29) and would net a three point shot a few minutes later to give the Lakers a 15 point lead. 

With five minutes remaining in the game, the Lakers would hold an 11 point lead (59-48) but the Panthers would begin a late rally to attempt to tie the game. Davenport made three straight three point shots in a span of two minutes to close the Lakers margin to two points (59-57) with 2:01 left in the game. The Lakers defense was able to hold off Davenport in the final few minutes of regulation to seal the conference win by a final score of 60-57.

Senior Ke'Montrece Collins' strong play for the Lakers continued as he led the team with 19 points in the game as well as a team-leading eight rebounds. Schrameyer and Allen would each record 10 points in the victory to rank second on the team in scoring.
