Baseball Wins, Stays Flawless at GLIAC Tournament

Chris Tanderys went 3-for-5 to lead WSU on Friday.

GARY, Ind. --  The second-seeded Wayne State University baseball program (35-15) exacted some revenge on third-seeded Northwood (30-20-1) on day two of the GLIAC Tournament.  WSU won 7-4, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Northwood had taken three of four from the Warriors in Midland earlier this season.

The event is being played at the U.S. Steel Yard, home of the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Northwood used two hits and a fielding error by WSU to score the game's first run in the top of the first inning.

Singles from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) and Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) allowed a sacrifice fly from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) to tie the game at 1-1.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) made it 2-1 with a single that ricocheted off the pitcher and went through the right side.  Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) drove in another run with a single into left field, giving WSU a 3-1 advantage.

Jacob Rybicki connected for a solo home run in the top of the third inning and used an RBI single later in the frame to tie the game at 3-3.  WSU left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning.

An error plus two walks and a wild pitch allowed Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Green & Gold loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning and a fielding error gave WSU a 5-3 lead.

A single and an error in the top of the eighth brought the go-ahead run to the plate for the Timberwolves.  However, WSU used a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning and the threat.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning and added runs on sacrifice flies from MacLean and Finkbeiner.

A leadoff walk came around to score in the top of hte ninth inning on a sacrifice fly.

AT THE PLATE
Tanderys went 3-for-5, while Dale had two hits and an RBI.  MacLean and Finkbeiner both had two RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (8-1) allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings.  He struck out six batters, walked a pair and gave up five hits.

Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) was touched for a run in two and 1/3 innings, while striking out two.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) recorded the final two outs without allowing a base runner.

UP NEXT

WSU will play Purdue Northwest on Saturday with a trip to the GLIAC Championships game on the line.  First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. eastern.  The Warriors have reached on the conference title game on three occasions (2012, 2011 and 2010).
