Cardinals split two with Rangers

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team returned to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with two games at the University of Wisconsin Parkside Wednesday in Kenosha, Wis.

The Cardinals fell in game one 5-4 but rebounded for a win in the finale 7-3 to earn the split. SVSU moves to 17-7 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC.

In the opener, SVSU fell behind 4-1 after three innings. The Cardinals tied the game with one swing of the bat on a three-run home run from Blasia Moyler in the top of the fourth. Parkside went in front with a run in the fifth and held on for the win.

Julia Mundy (6-3) took the loss on the mound in 4.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on six hits, walking two, and striking out four.  

SVSU took the lead in game two on an error in the second and added two more in the fifth on a two-run single from Leah Denome. The Rangers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run.

The Cardinals regained the advantage in the sixth with a two-run triple from Sarah Gersch, while Sara Moos added a sacrifice fly for an insurance run in the seventh.

Emily Depew (3-0) got the complete game for the Cardinals, allowing three runs, all unearned, walking three, and striking out eight.

The Cardinals travel to Davenport University for two games Saturday in Grand Rapids. The suspended game from March 23 will be concluded prior to the start of the doubleheader at 1 pm.
