Bruce strike lifts SVSU to GLIAC semis

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team won a thrilling match in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament over Northern Michigan University Monday at the SVSU Practice Field.

The Cardinals, for the ninth time in 2021 went to a second overtime period. SVSU earned a corner early in the second extra frame and senior Robbie Bruce netted the game-winner, striking the ball directly into the net from the corner.

The 1-0-win moves SVSU to 10-4-5 overall this season and advances the Cardinals to the GLIAC semifinals.

The Cardinals controlled the pace of play for most of the contest, with SVSU outshooting NMU 24-6. Despite the large advantage in shots, the Cardinals were only able to put three attempts on net heading into the second overtime.

Danny Barlow entered the game for the first time to start the second overtime and quickly earned a scoring chance that resulted in the corner kick for Bruce that ended the contest.

Callum Harley made two saves in the net to preserve the shutout for the Cardinals.

No. 3 seed SVSU will take on No. 2 seed Davenport University on Friday in Kenosha, Wis., at the host site of the top-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

SVSU held an advantage in the season series with the Panthers, winning double overtime at Davenport and earning a 1-1 draw at home.
