GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team won its second consecutive match, edging Cornerstone University on the road Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

After the Golden Eagles won the point in doubles, taking two of three matches, SVSU won four of six singles matches, including two in a third set super tiebreaker, to earn the 4-3 victory. The win improves the season record to 2-4 overall for the Cardinals.

Joanne Gao and Chelsea Dzenga took their match at No. 1 doubles 6-2. After a loss at No. 2 doubles, SVSU had a chance to earn the point in doubles, but Cornerstone escaped with a tiebreaker win at No. 3.

Gao dropped her first set at No. 2 singles before rallying for a 6-4 win in the second set. She battled to a 10-8 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

Gyselle Daza Gutierrez cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, while Nicole Johnson earned a three-set win, including a 10-2 performance in the tiebreaker at No. 5 singles. Adiya Young controlled her match at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4.

"Just a really good comeback win," SVSU Head Coach Ryan Ruzziconi said. "Down the way we were in this match, this team fought in each singles match to battle back for the win. Couldn't be prouder of the effort."

The Cardinals now turn their focus to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season, opening against Northwood University at 1 pm on March 20 in Midland, Mich.
