Another 7-0 Shutout Victory For Men's Tennis Ends Long Road Trip

The Warriors win at Hillsdale to conclude 18 straight matches away from home.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-9 overall) recorded a fourth consecutive victory by posting a 7-0 decision over Hillsdale College (10-6 overall) on Tuesday afternoon at the Margot V. Biermann Center in Hillsdale.

The Warriors concluded a string of 18 consecutive matches away from home, while recording three straight shutout victories (4-0 at LSSU, 7-0 at MTU, and 7-0 at HC) to finish the road trip.

DOUBLES
WSU nabbed two of the three matches in doubles action.

The third-ranked pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) tallied a 6-3 win over Brennan Cimpeanu and Brian Hackman at the top flight.  The two have now won five consecutive doubles matches.

Also winning and helping Wayne State claim the opening point were Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England).  The duo picked up a 7-5 victory against Sean Barstow and Tyler Conrad at the second position to capture a three-match winning streak together.

Finally, Dom Spicer (London, England) and Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) fell in heart-breaking fashion at the No. 3 spot, falling 13-11 in a tiebreaker to Aidan Pack and Daniel Gilbert to drop a 7-6 overall decision.

SINGLES
The Warriors were challenged in spots, but all six singles players recorded wins on Tuesday.

Playing at the top flight for just the second time this spring and sixth time in his career, Grey notched his first singles win at the first spot.  He defeated Cimpeanu 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Dropping down to the No. 2 spot for this match, Drenth was also a winner, earning a 6-1, 7-6 (1) straight sets victory over Conrad.  It was the third win at the second flight for the sophomore this season.

At the No. 3 spot, Karcz handled Pack by scores of 6-1 and 6-1 to extend his singles match winning streak to six.

After not playing in doubles, Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) registered back-to-back set wins of 6-2 over Barstow at the No. 5 spot to give the Warriors another point on the scoreboard.

Laws grabbed two set victories of 6-3 at the sixth flight to down Gilbert.

Not to be forgotten, Spicer claimed a well-earned three-set triumph vs. Hackman at the third position. After not playing in singles the past three matches for the Warriors, the redshirt junior showed why he is ranked as the No. 42 player in the nation by recovering from a second set loss and winning the match with a 6-4 victory in the final set.
