Baseball Holds On for 7-6 Win

The Warriors will now direct their attention to the start of league play.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (6-3 overall) topped Bethel (5-2 overall) 7-6 on Thursday afternoon to salvage a win in the three game series after dropping the first two matchups.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning using two singles to collect the game's first tally.  Senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first and moved to second on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI single by redshirt junior CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).

Junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle) started the bottom of the third inning with a single and Finkbeiner gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead with an RBI double.  Drogosch collected his second RBI of the day with a single.  Redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) made it 5-1 as he plated two unearned runs with a single to make Bethel pay for a two-out error.

Bethel used a solo home run to score a run in the top of the fourth inning but WSU responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) started the frame with a single and stole second base.  Redshirt freshman Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) doubled Maury home before Finkbeiner notched his second RBI with a single, making it 7-2.

Another solo blast from Bethel trimmed the deficit to 7-3 in the top of the fifth inning.  The comeback attempt continued for the Royals as they scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to pull within two, 7-5.  A walk, a single, an error and a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning cut Wayne State's advantage to 7-6.

Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) worked the final inning and 2/3 to seal the one-run win.

AT THE PLATE
Drogosch finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Finkbeiner and Tanderys also drove in two runs a piece.

ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (1-0) posted his first career collegiate win by working five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks.  Junior Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) gave up an unearned run and struck out three batters in his two and a 1/3 innings of action.  Schmidt collected his first save of the season by working a perfect inning and 2/3.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will begin GLIAC play with a four-game series against Northwood on March 26th at Harwell Field.  First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
