Football Blanks Davenport 34-0

Warriors record first GLIAC shutout since 2011

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Wayne State University football team (6-3 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) won 34-0 at Davenport University (3-5, 1-5 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  The shutout was the first for the Warriors since a 31-0 blanking of Walsh on August 30, 2018, and the first GLIAC whitewash since a 55-0 triumph over Tiffin on Sept. 10, 2011.  The last GLIAC road shutout by WSU was a 19-0 victory at Ferris State on Oct. 18, 2008.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a failed onside kick by WSU due to a kick catching interference call, the Warrior defense allowed one first down before forcing a punt.  WSU then went three-and-out before DU had to punt.

Wayne State's second possession resulted in a six-play, 78-yard touchdown drive concluding in a 38-yard TD reception by sophomore Donte McClure (Port Clinton, Ohio) on a third-and-15.  Besides the touchdown throw, senior quarterback Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott) also had a 33-yard completion to sophomore tight end Nick Poterack (Byron Center, Mich.).

Davenport went three-and-out on its ensuing possession, and the Warrior offense drove 50 yards in five plays for a 14-0 advantage.  Senior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) scored his GLIAC leading 11th rushing touchdown on a 32-yard scamper.  The big play of the drive was a 16-yard reception by graduate student Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) on a third-and-11.

The Panthers went three-and-out before Wayne State drove 61 yards in nine plays to increase its lead to 21-0.  Kupp had a three-yard scramble on third-and-three.  Poterack had a 14-yard catch, while Nicholas had a 16-yard run to set up the touchdown.

Wayne State drove 70 yards in nine plays on its second possession after halftime to extend its lead to 28-0.  Nicholas had a 29-yard touchdown jaunt to complete the scoring drive.  Kyle Lewis (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) had a 10-yard reception and Kupp had an 11-yard quarterback draw to start the drive.

Late in the fourth quarter following a Warrior punt, senior defensive end Brady Beedon (Marysville, Mich.) intercepted a Panther screen pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown to complete the scoring.
