Preview: Volleyball Set for a Full Weekend of GLIAC Competition

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team is back in competition this weekend. The Lakers will have a challenging weekend ahead of them as they will play three consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road matches. LSSU will play a 7:00 p.m. match at Grand Valley State on Friday, Oct. 22 followed by 2:00 p.m. matches on both Saturday and Sunday. The Lakers will play at Davenport on Saturday and wrap up the weekend at Ferris State on Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers will face three opponents on the road for the second weekend in a row following their participation in the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament. The Lakers would fall in all three matches while winning the first set against Malone last weekend. On the weekend, the Lakers were led by Halle Grulke, who would add another 93 assists to her impressive career total. Camdyn Odykirk would record 27 kills on the weekend, enough to lead her squad. 

Grand Valley State University Lakers (12-7, 5-3 GLIAC)

GVSU currently sits in second place in the GLIAC South division behind Ferris State. GVSU, who are winners of their last three matches, feature Junior outside hitter Ally Graham who was the GLIAC south player of the week for week three of this season. Ali Thompson leads her squad with 203 kills on the season. GVSU is coached by Jason Johnson, who is in his first year in the position of head coach.

Davenport University Panthers (11-9, 3-5 GLIAC)

The Panthers also participated in the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament where they would beat all three teams they faced. However, the Panthers have had a bit of a rough stretch in GLIAC play, losing their last three GLIAC matches. The Panthers are led in assists by Grace Hayes who has recorded 450 so far this season. Defensively, Kenzie Corstange leads her team in digs with 358 on the season. The Panthers are coached by Brian Netzler who is in his second year in the role. 

Ferris State University Bulldogs (15-4, 6-2)

The Bulldogs sit in the driver's seat in the GLIAC South with a conference record of 6-2. Currently on a 10 game win streak, the Bulldogs would also sweep at the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament.

Led by Katie O'Connell, who has been named GLIAC South Player of the Week on three occasions weeks this season, the Bulldogs have only lost three sets in this 10 game stretch. FSU's head coach is Tia Brandel-Wilhelm who has started her 26th season in this capacity. 

What's Next:

Following this weekend's competition, the Lakers will return home to face off against the Saginaw Valley Cardinals on Friday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m. and against the Wayne State Warriors at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Both Games will be held in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on LSSU's main campus.
