Volleyball Dominates GVSU in Sweep

The Warriors hit .320 for the match for their third straight sweep.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (10-5, 4-3 GLIAC) dispatched Grand Valley State (10-5, 4-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei.  WSU collected its third sweep in as many matches, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers led 4-3 but a 5-0 run by WSU gave the home team an 8-4 lead.  A kill from  Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) made it 12-8 and a 7--0 rally made it 19-9.  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) collected three kills and two blocks during that stretch.  The Green & Gold dominated the rest fo the set and won 25-14.  Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) ended the game with a kill.

The Warrior started the second set leading 6-2 and 9-3.  A block by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) and Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) accounted for the ninth point.  A service ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) gave the home team a 15-6 advantage.  WSU controlled the rest of the set and led 18-11 and 21-13 after a point by Giroux.  Morrison notched kills for points 24 and 25 as the Warriors went up 2-0, winning 25-16.

WSU won the first seven points of the third set to set the tone.  GVSU trimmed the margin to two, 11-9 but Wayne State responded by taking the next five points to go up 16-9.  Kills from Shell and VanderWal made it 21-14 and the set ended the set on back-to-back kills from Withun.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Shell paced the Warrior attack with 13 kills, hitting an impressive .542, while VanderWal tallied 11 kills.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 36 assists and 10 digs, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) posted 18 digs.
