Baseball Gives Up Late Lead on Monday

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (5-2 overall) lost 4-3 to Bethel (4-1 overall) on Monday afternoon in the first of three games between the teams.  The Royals used four hits in the bottom of the ninth to score three runs and win the one-run contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) led off the top of the second inning with a double and redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) followed with a single.  A passed ball allowed MacLean to touch home and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

The Royals tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth powered by two hits and a walk.  Bethel threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning with a pair of two-out singles but redshirt freshman catcher Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) threw behind the runner at first to pick him off and end the frame.

Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) started the ninth inning with a single and Ray reached on an error.  A sacrifice bunt preceded a two-run single by redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), which gave the Green & Gold a 3-1 advantage.

Wayne State was unable to record an out in the ninth inning as the Royals used four hits and a walk to earn the walk-off win.

AT THE PLATE
Redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) went 3-for-5, while MacLean and Tanderys both posted two-hit performances.

ON THE MOUND
Graduate Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) was solid in his second start of the season, working seven innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks with four punch outs.

Redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.  Redshirt sophomore Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) gave up two hits to start the ninth inning before redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) (1-1) suffered the loss by allowing the game-winning run to score.
