Bats Go Quiet as Season Ends in GLIAC Tournament

LANSING, Mich. -- The fifth-seeded Wayne State University baseball team (23-16 overall) saw its 2021 season come to a close on Saturday at the GLIAC Tournament with a 3-0 loss to Grand Valley State (23-14 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED
GVSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run on a hit and two hit batters in the bottom of the second inning.  A 9-2 double play started by redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) limited the damage and ended the inning.

Junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk to begin the fifth inning, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout but WSU was unable to tie the game as the Lakers escaped.  Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) reached via an error to start the sixth inning, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and stole third base but was stranded.

A two-out RBI double from Anthony Cocco in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed GVSU's advantage to 2-0.  GVSU extended its lead to 3-0 with a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

AT THE PLATE
The Green & Gold were only able to collect two hits and those came from redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) and junior Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett)

ON THE MOUND
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (4-4) started and allowed a run in three innings on two hits and three walks, while striking out two.  Junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) allowed a run in three innings out of the bullpen before freshman David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) allowed a run in his two innings of work.
