Women's Basketball Tops Purdue Northwest in OT, 61-56

Kate Sherwood had game-high 15 points.

HAMMOND, Ind.--  The Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-5 Overall, 5-5 GLIAC) played on Friday afternoon at Purdue Northwest (2-8 Overall, 2-8 GLIAC) and won 61-56 in overtime.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors scored first off a jumper from Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) along with a free throw for a conventional three-point play to start the contest.  Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich./ Belleville) would score on a jumper to start a run of six consecutive points giving WSU a lead of six points (9-3) at the 7:00 mark.

Halle Barnett (Toledo, Ohio/ Sylvania Southview) would score on a lay-up with an assist from Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich./ Flint Powers Catholic) near the end of the first period.  Wayne State led 13-10 after 10 minutes.
 
Wayne State would score first in the second quarter on a lay-up from Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Huron) to put the Warriors up 15-10.

The Pride would score 10 of the next 12 points to take the lead by three (20-17) at the 5:09 mark.

Two three pointers from Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich./ Grand Haven) tied the game at 23-23 with 2:12 remaining in the first half.

PNW's Mercedes Simmons would make a jumper giving the Pride a 25-23 lead at 1:48 mark.

Sherwood scored last to tie the game 25-25 at the half.

SECOND HALF RECAP
Purdue Northwest would score first on a three pointer to take the lead (28-25).

Sherwood would go on to respond with a bucket and free throw at 8:38 mark to tie the game at 28-28.

Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) would make a jumper and foul shot putting WSU ahead 31-30.

Over the last 4:08 of the third period, there would be back and forth scoring totaling five lead changes.

The Pride made a jump shot with two seconds left to take the lead, 39-38, at the end of the stanza.

PNW opened the final period with two consecutive jumpers.  WSU would score at the 8:05 mark off a Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich./ North Farmington) bucket to get within three (43-40).

A three pointer from Houle with an assist from Miller at the 6:27 mark would get the Warriors within two (45-43).

Purdue Northwest would go on a four-point run to extend their lead to 51-45 with 5:14 left in regulation.

Two consecutive jumpers by Sherwood pulled WSU within one (53-52) at the 3:25 mark.

A free throw by Cherney would tie the game, 53-53, at the 48 second mark.

In overtime, WSU scored first off a Miller three pointer to take the lead, 56-53.  Cherney would split a pair from the charity stripe at the 3:01 mark to put the Warriors up 57-55.  With 25 seconds left, Fugate would make a jumper to cushion Wayne State's lead to 59-56.

After an offensive foul on Purdue Northwest, Sherwood made two foul shots with 12 seconds left to clinch the win, 61-56.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sherwood scored a game-best 15 points.  Miller contributed 13 points, and team-high totals of two assists and four steals.  Fugate helped out with 11 points.  Houle added nine points off the bench on three triples.  Cherney grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Brittany Barnard contributed a team-best nine points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks.  Savaya Brockington, Molly Devalkenaere, and Simmons all helped out with eight points apiece.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 37% (22-of-59) from the field, while PNW connected on 40% (23-of-57) from the floor.  The Warriors were 12-of-16 (75%) from the charity stripe, with the Pride making 3-of-5 (60%) of their shots from the foul line.  Wayne State had a 40-35 edge in rebounding, while also leading 9-8 in steals.
